Remarkable Dachshund Facts

September 19, 2018

We have previously talked about this fierce, quirky shaped, small dog and we’re doing it again!

Dachshund puppies have been around for over 300 years and adored by all walks of life. There’s no wonder that we are highlighting these spunky pups. Continue reading to learn more quirky facts about Dachshund puppies.

Dachshunds Galore

The AKC first recognized the Dachshund breed in 1885, and they were originally only black and tan and one size. That was then, and this is now! You can find the Dachshund in 12 standard colors and three different kinds of markings. In addition to the various colors, they have two accepted sizes which are standard and miniature, and their coats can be smooth, long or wire-haired. Their personalities remain the same, so you have so many options to choose!

Their “Hot Dog” Bodies

There’s no doubt that Dachshund puppies have one of the most unique shapes. Their long little bodies make them one of the most recognized breeds out there. However, they weren’t bred to be marveled at for their cuteness. Over 300 years ago, they were bred to hunt badgers. Their name literally means “badger dog” in German. Their little legs and steadfast nature allowed them to enter badger dens and take on animals larger than they were in really small spaces.

Dachshunds Are Respected

Did you know that Dachshunds are the 11th most popular breed in America? They have so many qualities that make them great pet companions. They are exceptional guard dogs who will quickly alert family members to possible intruders (or the occasional mailman). They may have little bodies, but they are well known for their athleticism.
